Thoreau's "Civil Disobedience"
In the latter paragraphs of “Civil Disobedience,” Thoreau gets out of jail. He picks up a mended shoe and right away latches on to a huckleberry party (a bunch of kids?).
Write a ¶ in which you examine that act (berry picking) in terms of, or in relation to, one or more of the main messages in “Civil Disobedience.” Imagine the piece without the huckleberry moment—what would it lack? Thoreau was a devoted naturalist, and it is known that he took great pleasure in picking berries. Situate the idea of personal pleasure among the larger idea of civil disobedience. Is Thoreau’s message relevant today?
